The Bali Starling is like no other bird on earth. Its snow-white feathers, vivid blue eye mask and gentle presence make it one of the most breathtaking species in the world. And as Bali's only endemic bird, it is a creature found nowhere else. To the Balinese people, it has long been considered sacred.
Sadly, that rarity made it a target. The illegal songbird trade pushed the Bali Starling to the very edge of extinction, with wild populations collapsing to just a handful of individuals in the early 2000s. It is one of the closest calls in modern conservation history.
