The keel-billed toucan is one of those birds that made me fall in love with tropical wildlife. With its oversized rainbow-colored bill, it almost looks like someone made it up.
When I created this piece, I kept thinking about how easy it is to focus on what makes a species beautiful, while forgetting how important it is to the ecosystem around it. Toucans help maintain healthy rainforests, yet the forests they depend on are disappearing in many parts of their range.
That's why organisations like the Toucan Rescue Ranch are so important. They rescue, rehabilitate and release toucans and other native wildlife, giving injured and displaced animals a second chance.
