The lesser scaup is one of those birds I probably would have overlooked when I first started paying attention to wildlife. It's not the brightest bird on the water, and it certainly isn't the loudest. However, the longer you look, the more details you notice. What first seems like a simple black and white duck suddenly has beautiful patterns, striking yellow eyes, and a character all its own.
I think that's one of the things I love most about wildlife. Sometimes the species that make the biggest impression aren't the ones demanding your attention. It's the ones that reward you for slowing down and taking a closer look.
